Latin vacillāt-, participial stem of vacillāre to sway, stagger, totter, etc., whence also French vaciller (1314), Italian vacillare, Portuguese vacillar, Spanish vacilar
Definitions
- 1:a. To swing or sway unsteadily; to be in unstable equilibrium; to stagger.
- b. To vary; to hover doubtfully.
- c. To fluctuate; to produce varying results.
- 2: To alternate or waver between different opinions or courses of action.
- 3: inability to take a stand : irresolution, indecision
